Dubai Unveils "The Island" – A Vegas-Style Oasis

04.12.2023

Dubai has announced the development of a new island, aptly named «The Island,» in the style of Las Vegas. Key attractions include renowned resorts like MGM, Bellagio, and Aria.

This mega-project, led by Wasl, will add 1400 hotel rooms along the Jumeirah coastline, enhancing Dubai’s hospitality offerings. Initially introduced in 2017, the construction is entrusted to the China State Construction Engineering Corporation, with a contract value of AED 4.4 billion.

In Fall 2022, MGM Resorts’ CEO Bill Hornbuckle confirmed that the anticipated MGM Resort Dubai would be a non-gaming integrated resort, aligning with Dubai’s stance on casino-free developments. MGM Resorts, a global leader, manages the colossal MGM Grand with 6852 rooms in Las Vegas.

Hornbuckle emphasized Dubai’s vision for a non-gaming resort, expressing keen interest in the region’s gaming industry evolution. The Dubai MGM Resort, featuring 1000 rooms and 10 villas, is poised to offer water shows, theaters, diverse dining, specialized shops, traditional and interactive museums, a beach club, and entertainment zones for all ages.

Adding to the context, the UAE introduced the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority in September 2023. Kevin Mallalli, with 30 years of experience, leads this federal body, overseeing regulations for commercial gaming and lotteries. While Abu Dhabi will manage control, individual emirates retain autonomy in deciding whether to permit gambling on their turf.

Presently, casino activities are prohibited in the UAE. However, in 2022, Wynn Resorts announced plans to construct an integrated resort with a gaming facility in Ras Al Khaimah by 2027. This development signals Dubai’s strategic shift towards non-gaming luxury resorts, influencing real estate dynamics. Stay tuned for the unfolding narrative!
